This invention minimizes hybrid vehicle fuel consumption over a pre-planned or predicted route. It does this by utilizing a receding horizon control (RHC) algorithm in combination with a novel approach of route decomposition and control of battery charging and discharging when the vehicle decelerates/accelerates. In addition, the RHC strategy creates a virtual terminal road segment to optimize the Dynamic Programming (DP) procedures, in order to save computing time and efforts.
