Lab Master - Abstracted and Comprehensive Laboratory Management

This invention discloses a comprehensive laboratory infrastructure management system (Lab Master) designed to unify protocol design, instrument control, and experimental data tracking within a single digital framework. It operates through four coordinated modules: an inventory module for compounds and libraries, a DoE (Design of Experiments) module for protocol design, a scheduler module that executes tasks while tracking system state, and an engine module that interfaces with laboratory instruments through standardized API endpoints. This technology improves upon current fragmented laboratory management platforms to enhance reproducibility of complex, machine-learning enabled research.

Technology

The system begins with the user uploading and registering all starting materials and labware into the inventory module, which stores them as structured records in a centralized database. Then, in the DoE module, the user can call that information to design protocols manually, through an API or spreadsheet, or by using integrated models to recommend optimized experimental conditions. The user can then simulate and inspect the drafted protocol to verify robustness at each step. Once verified, the procedure is saved as an experiment in the scheduler module, which, at the designated time, executes its tasks in sequence with options for automation or manual control. During execution, the engine module maps high-level, hardware-agnostic protocol steps to the unique command sets of each instrument, enabling seamless automation across the system.

Problem Addressed

Modern laboratory workflows are fragmented, as robot operation, protocol design, data storage, and electronic lab notebooks often exist as separate systems, making reproducibility, automation, and data security difficult. These factors hinder standardization across disciplines, limiting researchers’ ability to produce results that are accepted and applicable beyond their own field. Existing solutions do not integrate physical lab object tracking, protocol execution, and data storage in a unified system. Lab Master overcomes these challenges by unifying inventory management, protocol execution, data capture, and labware status in one system that produces standardized, machine-readable records to support interdisciplinary research.

Advantages

  • Unifies all workflows and state tracking for labware and reagents into one integrated platform
  • Customizable to support any laboratory’s unique hardware and data-collection workflows
  • Supports reproducibility through standardized procedural recording
  • Machine-readable data guarantees every action and parameter is recorded unambiguously for reproducible execution
  • Provides automated protocol generation using integrated experiment-suggesting models
