Developing advanced X-ray detectors to study high-energy astrophysical phenomena
Background and Experience
Dr. Bautz is the Associate Director of the MIT Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research, where is he also a Senior Research Scientist. He has been developing instruments for X-ray astronomy and associated detector technology for more than 30 years. In the course of this work he has supported space missions developed by NASA , the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency, and the European Space Agency, and worked to adapt technology developed at federally funded research laboratories to scientific purposes.
Dr. Bautz conducts observational research on clusters of galaxies and develops instrumentation, mainly for high-energy astrophysics. Recently, his observational work has focused on the astrophysics of a new collection–clusters detected in a Sunyaev-Zeldovich survey performed by the South Pole Telescope, and on hitherto unexplored regions at the outskirts of clusters. Mark is also working with groups at MKI and at MIT Lincoln Laboratory on next-generation active pixel X-ray imaging detectors.
Professor Bautz received his B.A. in physics and philosophy from Oxford University and his PhD in Physics from Princeton University.
