Oil-selective meshes are created by coating a supporting stainless steel wire mesh with LDPE, thus generating a hydrophobic and oleophilic surface that is suitable for oil-water separation. The thickness of the LDPE coating determines the size of the mesh pores, rendering them easily modifiable. Using predictions based on field conditions, the pore size can be optimized to maximize oil recovery and water rejection. Oil is recovered based on capillary action and flows into a collection reservoir, requiring only external pumping to maintain the process.
